Shanghai Port Reports Cargo and Container Turnover Increases In Early 2025

According to a report from the port administration, the Port of Shanghai experienced a 1% year-on-year increase in cargo turnover during January and February 2025, surpassing 9.3 million tonnes, reports PortNews. 

Increased Turnover

In the first two months of 2025, the Port of Shanghai saw a 16% increase in cargo turnover, reaching 93.6 million tons, and a 7% rise in container turnover, totaling 8.9 million TEU.

In 2024, the port achieved a global first by exceeding 50 million TEUs in container volume. Its overall cargo turnover grew by 3% to 580.5 million tonnes, and its container turnover increased by 4.9% to 51.5 million TEU compared to 2023.

The Port of Shanghai, managed by SIPG since 2005, is the world’s busiest container port, handling over 580.5 million tonnes of cargo annually as of 2024.

The port has direct maritime connections with Russian ports, including a container service by Aurora Line linking Shanghai and St. Petersburg, a 2023 voyage via the Northern Sea Route (NSR) from Arkhangelsk to Shanghai, and a new service by New Shipping Line in 2024 connecting Shanghai and Ningbo to Arkhangelsk via the NSR.
