Shanghai Port has set a new global record for monthly container throughput, handling more than 5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in January 2025, according to its operator, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd.

This milestone comes shortly after Shanghai Port became the first in the world to surpass 50 million TEUs in December 2024. Maintaining its position as the world’s busiest container port, it recorded 51.51 million TEUs in 2024, marking the 15th consecutive year as the top global port by container volume.

Key Factors Behind Shanghai Port’s Success

According to local reports, several factors have contributed to Shanghai Port’s long-standing dominance:

  • Enhanced shipping hub capabilities that improve efficiency and connectivity.
  • Continuous operational optimization to accommodate increasing trade demands.
  • China’s robust foreign trade and economic resilience, which drive container movement.

Shanghai Port has consistently set new monthly throughput records in recent years, including in July 2024, January 2022, and August 2021, aligning with peak shipping seasons between July–October and December–January.

Boosting Shanghai’s Global Shipping Hub Ambitions

The record-breaking performance underscores Shanghai’s strategic role as an international shipping centre. It is expected to fuel the city’s ambition to solidify its status as a leading global maritime trade hub, strengthening its economic influence on international logistics.
