The Norwegian Maritime Authority has released its Accident Status Report for the first half of 2025, highlighting a notable increase in serious maritime incidents.
Between January and June, a total of 589 incidents were registered on commercial vessels, including 312 classified as accidents and 277 as near-accidents. The report raises concern over the rising number of serious events like fires, groundings, and personal injuries, prompting continued focus on the country’s maritime safety strategy.
Cargo Ships Top the List; Groundings Surge
Cargo vessels were the most affected, accounting for 46% of total accidents, followed by fishing vessels (29%) and passenger ships (24%). Of particular concern is the 54% increase in groundings compared to 2024, and a 21% jump over the five-year average, signaling the need for better navigational safety protocols.
One Fatality Reported; Focus Remains on Prevention
One person died while working on a commercial vessel in this period—three fewer fatalities than last year. While the drop is welcomed, Acting Director General Håvard Gåseidnes reaffirmed that “one life lost is one too many” and emphasized the continued implementation of Norway’s National Action Plan for Maritime Safety, aiming for zero fatalities and serious injuries at sea.
Personal Injuries on the Rise
The first half of 2025 saw a 16% increase in serious personal injuries, reaching 170 cases, alongside 113 minor injuries. The most common causes were blows, crush injuries, and onboard falls, which together made up 74% of the reported injuries. These findings point to the ongoing need for stronger onboard safety measures and crew training.
Fishing Vessel Losses and Fire Incidents
A total of nine fishing vessels under 15 meters were lost in the first half of the year, primarily due to leaks, fires, or explosions. Some of these incidents also resulted in injuries, further underlining the vulnerability of small-scale commercial fishing operations. The report also noted a general rise in fire-related incidents, a trend that mirrors concerns raised globally in recent maritime safety analyses.
The Norwegian Maritime Authority’s H1 2025 report presents a mixed picture—while fatalities have decreased, the surge in groundings, personal injuries, and vessel losses signals areas that need urgent attention. With the continuation of national safety initiatives, Norway aims to ensure every seafarer returns home safe and its waters remain secure for all maritime activities.
