Shell has marked a key milestone in maritime energy transition by completing its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for a cruise vessel at the Singapore Cruise Centre. This marks Shell’s growing role in supporting LNG adoption across the shipping industry.
Key Event
On May 27, 2025, Shell supplied LNG to the ASUKA III, the largest Japan-flagged cruise ship, operated by NYK Cruise, a group company of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line).
Dexter Belmar, General Manager and Head of Global Downstream LNG at Shell, confirmed the operation and expressed appreciation toward NYK for their continued trust in Shell’s LNG supply capabilities.
Collaboration with FueLNG
The bunkering was executed by FueLNG Private Limited, a joint venture between Seatrium and Shell Singapore.
Singapore Cruise Centre emphasized the importance of the milestone, stating,
“This milestone marks Shell LNG’s first supply to an LNG-powered cruise ship in the region,”
This achievement comes shortly after Silvernova’s LNG bunkering at the same terminal in February 2025, showing a growing pattern of LNG usage in cruise operations.
Expanding Dual-Fuel Cruise Fleet
Belmar added,
“We extend our gratitude to NYK for their continued trust in our capabilities to supply LNG to a diverse range of their vessels, including pure car and truck carriers, and bulk carriers across our bunkering hubs in Singapore and Europe.”
Shell’s successful LNG bunkering of ASUKA III represents a significant step in promoting cleaner marine fuels in Asia. With cruise lines increasingly turning to dual-fuel technology, Singapore is positioning itself as a central hub for sustainable maritime operations. As the LNG-powered cruise fleet grows, collaborations like that between Shell, NYK, and FueLNG are expected to play a vital role in shaping a greener future for global shipping.
