South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and software pioneer Microsoft have joined hands to digitalize SHI’s shipyards, says an article published on marine monk website.
A digital transformation strategy
Microsoft’s cloud-based IT solutions and technical expertise will be utilized by SHI under the agreement, which is set to enable SHI to accelerate its transition to low-cost, high-efficiency shipyards.
‘Smart Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI)’, a digital transformation strategy was established by SHI back in 2019, which is aimed at using digital technology across every area of the shipyard, including design, production and purchasing, to promote business innovation.
“We plan to actively cooperate so that SHI’s digital transformation can become a representative IT innovation success story in the shipbuilding and offshore industry through the latest technologies and solutions based on Microsoft Cloud,” added Lee Ji-Eun, the CEO at Microsoft Korea.
Benefit of utilizing Microsoft’s technology
SHI’s shipyard productivity will be increased, while a mobile work network will be built in the Geoje shipyard, based on a high-speed wireless network, utilizing Microsoft’s technology.
Microsoft will be providing Azure, its cloud computing service, Teams, its collaboration software, artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse technology to SHI as a part of this partnership.
SHI then plans to gather all the data and information from every sector into a digital virtual space.
Bae Jin-Han, the CFO at SHI Management Support Office said, “The ultimate goal of “Smart SHI” is the digital transformation that processes all information in the shipyard with advanced IT technology.”
