A fire broke out aboard a Hong Kong-flagged container ship on 28 January, but it was not related to Houthi attacks, according to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), reports Reuters.
Ship fire in Red Sea
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, though a maritime security source indicated that it may have been caused by hazardous cargo on board. In recent years, there has been a rise in fires on container ships, often linked to flammable materials, Reuters reports.
The crew abandoned the vessel in the Red Sea on 18 January, as confirmed by maritime sources.
While the Houthis have been targeting international shipping in the region since November 2023, largely in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, this particular incident is not believed to be a result of their actions.
The Houthis previously stated that they would restrict attacks to vessels connected to Israel if a ceasefire in Gaza is fully implemented.
