- Fifteen year contract to boat companies providing economical and uneconomical route services.
- Old ships servicing uneconomical routes to be stopped and ship owners to get better ship to provide better services to the public.
The Ministry of Transport, in an attempt to get better ships to service the maritime islands, is currently revising the ships franchise scheme, says an article published in FBC News.
Long term contracts
To achieve this, the ministry intends to bring out longer term contracts for boat companies compared to the existing one year contract in place.
Economical and Uneconomical routes
Jone Usamate, the Minister in charge, has confirmed that there are plans to give a fifteen year contract to boat companies who want to provide services both to economical and uneconomical routes.
He added that the old ships which are currently being used to service the uneconomical route will be removed eventually.
New ships in place of old ones
Usamate states that having a 10 or 15 year contract ensures business for the next ten years. As a result, the ship owner will get a better ship.
He also said that the ministry will also be revising the amount of subsidies given.
Better customer service
The Minister hopes that this contract will allow ship owners to get better ship, manage them well, thereby provide better services to the public.
