DNV GL Warns Ship Owners to Prepare for Arctic Cold Conditions

1931

DNV GL has issued a warning to the shipowners, for vessels that are calling on Canadian ports to prepare for severe cold conditions.

What happened?

The International accredited registrar and classification society of DNV GL has called the ship owners to prepare their ships, equipment, and crew in tune to harsh weather conditions. It also noted that owners should pay attention to their onboard safety and navigation-related equipment, which may be damaged or impeded from working as intended under extremely low temperatures.

Word of caution

The society has also warned the owners to keep a close eye on their equipments and technical systems to avoid Port State Control detentions.

Additionally, the society has put forth certain recommendations for ships navigating in cold climatic conditions, such as performing risk assessments to assess the ship’s current preparedness for operation in low temperatures, and preparing the vessel and initiating mitigation actions to ensure the working order of all equipment.

They have included a DNV GL Winterized notation and IMO Polar since both preparations have defined the minimum requirements required for both equipment and crew to protect against adverse conditions.
