The shipping activity in Israel has been severely impacted by a combination of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and ongoing conflicts in the region, leading to significant disruptions in port operations, says an article published on calcalis tech website.

Summary

  • The port of Eilat experienced a 60% drop in the import of vehicles during the fourth quarter of 2023, mainly due to Houthi attacks on vessels en route to Israel.
  • The port of Ashdod saw a 94% collapse in vehicle imports in the same period due to the conflict in Gaza. Large importers chose to avoid Ashdod and anchored in ports north of Tel Aviv.
  • Despite these challenges, the total vehicle imports for 2023 in Israel slightly increased, reaching 344,700 vehicles.
  • Ongoing conflicts in the southern and northern borders during the fourth quarter of 2023 significantly reduced transshipment operations at Israeli seaports by approximately 70%.

Port Of Eilat Faces 60% Drop In Vehicle Imports

During the fourth quarter of 2023, the port of Eilat, operated by Nakash Brothers’ Papo Shipping, experienced a staggering 60% drop in the import of vehicles. Only 18,000 vehicles were unloaded during this period, compared to 70,600 in the same quarter of 2022. The main contributing factor is the Houthi attacks on vessels en route to Israel, compelling international shipping companies to alter routes and extend transit times.

Ashdod Port’s Vehicle Imports Collapse By 94%

The conflict in Gaza also took a toll on the port of Ashdod, where vehicle imports witnessed a collapse of 94% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Only about 2,500 vehicles were imported compared to 43,100 in the same period of 2022.

Large importers, responding to frequent rocket fire, chose to avoid Ashdod and anchored in ports north of Tel Aviv. Haifa Port emerged as a beneficiary, handling approximately 27,000 vehicles in the last quarter of 2023 compared to 7,600 vehicles in the corresponding quarter of 2022.

Overall Vehicle Imports Remain Marginal Increase

Despite the challenges, the total vehicle imports for 2023 in Israel slightly increased, reaching 344,700 vehicles, compared to 342,600 vehicles in 2022. The distribution of imports reveals that 43% of vehicles entered through the Port of Eilat, 33% through the Port of Ashdod, and 24% through the Port of Haifa.

Sharp Decline In Transshipment Operations

Ongoing conflicts in the southern and northern borders during the fourth quarter of 2023 significantly reduced transshipment operations at Israeli seaports. The number of transshipment operations dropped by approximately 70%, with around 11,800 operations conducted between October and December 2023, compared to 19,500 in the same period of 2022. The decline underscores the broader impact of regional conflicts on maritime trade and logistics in the region.
