The global shipping community has collectively endorsed significant updates to the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), reinforcing its commitment to seafarer welfare, reads an ICS release .

These amendments, resulting from a week of intensive negotiations, are set to take effect in 2027.

Key Updates to the Maritime Labour Convention

The updated MLC introduces several enhancements aimed at improving the working and living conditions of seafarers:

  • Enhanced Health and Safety Standards: The amendments include provisions for better health and safety measures, ensuring a safer working environment for seafarers.
  • Improved Living Conditions: There are updated requirements for onboard accommodation and recreational facilities, promoting the well-being of seafarers during their service.
  • Strengthened Social Protection: The updates provide enhanced social protection measures, including better access to medical care and social security benefits.
  • Gender Equality Initiatives: New provisions aim to promote gender equality within the maritime industry, supporting the inclusion of women seafarers.

Industry Support and Implementation

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), representing shipowners and operators globally, has been instrumental in advocating for these updates. ICS Secretary General Guy Platten emphasized the importance of these amendments in attracting and retaining a skilled and diverse workforce in the maritime sector.

The ICS has also committed to providing guidance and resources to assist shipping companies in implementing these changes effectively.
