Nor-Shipping Recognises Trio for Industry Innovation

1980

THE Nor-Shipping opening conference provided an opportunity to applaud ‘innovation and innovators’ in the shipping industry, with three accolades presented to companies and individuals that ‘dare to do business as unusual’.

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was on hand to award trophies, designed by Hadeland Glassverk, to the winners of the ‘Next Generation Ship’, ‘Energy Efficiency’ and ‘Young Entrepreneur’ categories.

The Energy Efficiency award was presented to Venture Joy, one of a series of 43,500 dwt geared handysize bulkers designed by Deltamarin for Hamburg Bulk Carriers, Germany.

Malcolm Latarche, chairman of the judging panel, said the jury members had been impressed by the fact the ship had been designed from the outset with energy efficiency and environmental performance levels in mind, while still managing to satisfy the needs of an “industry workhorse”.

Color Hybrid, currently under construction for Color Lines, scooped the Next Generation award. The 30,000 gt ro-pax ferry, designed by Fosen Yard and being built by Ulstein Verft, will be the world’s largest hybrid craft.

Finally, Norsepower chief executive Tuomas Riski was announced as the winner of Nor-Shipping’s coveted Young Entrepreneur Award 2017.

The 38-year-old Finn was chosen from a final shortlist that included Joel Spark, co-founder of Spire, Xeneta chief executive Patrik Berglund, and Christine Spiten, co-founder of Blueye Robotics. Ms Spiten was given special recognition for her work with the Norwegian start-up.
