On this World Ocean Day, we honour the Ocean as the lifeblood of our planet. It produces 50% of the world’s oxygen, absorbs 25% of global CO₂ emissions, and enables 80% of world trade through maritime shipping. For the shipping industry, the Ocean isn’t just a route—it’s a responsibility.
Decarbonising Shipping: A $150 Billion Commitment
The shipping industry contributes around 3% of global GHG emissions, but it is also leading efforts to change that. Ocean carriers have already deployed 200 zero/near-zero GHG (ZNZ) fuel ships, and 1,000 such vessels are expected by 2030.
This transition represents an investment of over USD 150 billion, making shipping a major driver of clean fuel adoption and maritime decarbonisation.
Policy & Global Cooperation: Scaling the Change
To enable widespread ZNZ fuel use, strong international regulation is key. The IMO’s global GHG reduction framework, supported by the shipping sector, lays the groundwork for scaling investment.
However, ZNZ fuels remain 3–6x more expensive than fossil fuels, and global production infrastructure is still limited. That’s why public-private collaboration is crucial for scaling sustainable maritime practices.
Protecting Biodiversity: Beyond Carbon
Decarbonisation is just one part of the industry’s Ocean commitment. Shipping is also working to:
-
Prevent ship strikes on marine wildlife
-
Reduce underwater noise pollution
-
Support policies that preserve marine ecosystems
These steps are vital for safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring that the Ocean remains a thriving habitat for generations to come.
The journey to net-zero by 2050 is not just about ships—it’s about systems, supply chains, ports, and people. On this World Ocean Day, the maritime industry reaffirms its pledge to protect the Ocean, decarbonise shipping, and invest in a sustainable future.
The Ocean sustains us—now it’s our turn to sustain the Ocean.
