Ships Beware! Bulker and Product Tanker Attacked by Pirates

On January 24, a bulk carrier and product tanker were attacked by pirates in South of Brass near Nigeria.

What happened?

The bulk carrier was approached by around five to seven armed pirates in a skiff. The armed pirates chased the vessel and opened fire on the vessel. The crew raised a general alarm and the deck lights were switched off. The vessel increased its speed and the crew members mustered in the citadel. However, the armed guards onboard the vessel managed to repel the attempted attack.

Second attack

In a second incident, a product tanker was attacked around 35nm South of Brass. The crew members raised an alarm and conducted an evasive manoeuvre while non-essential crew members mustered in the citadel. The pirates were not able to keep with the product tanker and abandoned their attack.

Both the incidents have been reported to the Nigerian Navy who have increased surveillance on the concerned route.
