The general cargo ship Riga lost propulsion power during the passage of English Canal.

What happened?

The vessel suffered engine cooling system failure north off Fecamp in France and remained adrift in the heavy traffic area. The crew was unable to fix the problem and to repair the engine failure and dropped anchor to prevent grounding or collision.

Towed to anchorage:

The accident was reported to the local authorities, who decided that vessel is a threat to shipping in the area with daylight fading and ordered French salvage tugs Abeille Languedoc and Abeille Liberte to carry out towage to Caen Anchorage.

The convoy successfully reached the destination and the vessel was secured there for further repairs and special survey.

No danger to the shipping way:

The owner will obey the decision of the French authorities, as he wanted to hire Salvage Company by himself, instead of paying high costs for the expensive rescue operation.

According to the shipowner, the vessel did not cause any danger to shipping in the area and was anchored outside the shipping way.

The investigation into the root cause of the accident is under way, but fortunately, there were no injured people and no water pollution.
