The mention of Midshipman X will leave a lasting impression on any woman employed in the maritime industry, as it becomes a significant moment etched in their memory, as reported by Mother Jones.
Midshipman X’s Bold Revelation
In September 2021, a student at the US Merchant Marine Academy, known as Midshipman X, bravely came forward with a blog post detailing her traumatic experience of being raped by a senior officer while serving as a 19-year-old cadet on a cargo ship. The post shed light on the pervasive issue of sexual violence against women in the Merchant Marine, an issue that is seldom acknowledged. Midshipman X revealed that out of over 50 women in her academy class, not a single one had escaped sexual harassment, assault, or degradation during their time at the academy or while training at sea. She further alleged that five cadets in her class had been raped during their offshore training.
Outrage and Action
After Midshipman X’s blog post went viral, industry leaders and politicians expressed outrage. Maersk Line, Limited identified the ship involved and launched an investigation, suspending five crew members. The alleged perpetrator was fired, and four others were dismissed for policy violations or non-compliance with the investigation. The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration vowed to review safety procedures for cadets. Deputy Transportation Secretary and Acting Maritime Administrator expressed unwavering support for Midshipman X and zero tolerance for sexual misconduct.
Empty Promises, Lingering Silence
Despite occasional news coverage and temporary measures, the pervasive mistreatment of women in the offshore industry has largely been ignored. Midshipman X’s account resonated with Ally Cedeno, a mariner turned advocate, who recognized the prevalence of similar stories shared by women over the years. The lack of surprise reflects a need for greater awareness and action within the industry to address the ongoing issue of sexual violence at sea.
#MeToo Echoes
Midshipman X’s blog post emerged during the #MeToo era, prompting numerous women to come forward with their own experiences of harassment, assault, pregnancy discrimination, bullying, racism, and pervasive misogyny in the maritime industry. These stories highlighted the profound psychological impact, with mariners like Madeleine Wolczko revealing the emotional toll of compartmentalizing their emotions while on duty and enduring daily tears during their off-ship periods.
