The inaugural Singapore Maritime Research Conference (SMRC) successfully concluded on March 27, gathering over 200 experts from academia, industry, and government to discuss maritime digital transformation and decarbonisation. Organised by the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), the event provided a platform for groundbreaking research and collaboration.
Advancing Maritime Research in Digitalisation and Sustainability
Themed “Powering Research in Digitalisation and Decarbonisation,” the conference showcased innovative maritime research, focusing on:

Speakers included 16 leading researchers from top universities and institutes worldwide, highlighting the importance of research in shaping the maritime industry’s future.
Research Poster Competition Showcases Emerging Innovations
The Research Poster Competition provided a platform for aspiring researchers to present their work in areas such as Next-Gen Ports, Smart Shipping, Green Technologies, and Maritime Digitalisation.

The competition attracted nearly 60 abstract submissions, with 36 finalists presenting their research.

Ms Ong Wen Qi from the Singapore Institute of Technology won the top prize for her project on fire-resilient battery room designs for electric harbourcrafts.
Collaboration for a Sustainable Maritime Future
The conference emphasized the importance of collaboration among researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to accelerate innovation and shape the maritime sector’s future.
Professor Low Teck Seng, Chairman of SMI, stated:
