  • LNG Bunkering Volumes at Singapore Port Soar Over 2,000%.
  • MPA Receives 14 Proposals for LNG and Low-Carbon Fuel Solutions.
  • Sea Trials to Focus on Safety, Scalability and Methane Emissions.

The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) will start liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering trials from the sea in the second half of 2025 as part of its move to increase the supply of LNG as a sea fuel, reports Lloyd’s List.

LNG Bunkering Volumes Leap Over 2,000%

LNG arrivals at the Port of Singapore have increased exponentially—from 16,000 tonnes in 2022 to 385,000 tonnes during the period from January to October 2024, representing a growth of over 2,000%.

MPA Receives 14 Proposals for LNG and Alternative Fuels

In December 2024, MPA released a call for proposals centered on sea-based LNG reloading as well as alternative marine fuel supply like bio-methane. There were 14 proposals received by the authority from a combination of fuel operators, bunker suppliers, storage companies, and energy companies. Eight of them proposed solutions for e-methane and bio-methane.

Trials to Assess Feasibility, Safety and Methane Mitigation

MPA will collaborate with chosen companies to implement sea-based refuelling trials towards the end of 2025. The tests will concentrate on measuring the viability, scalability, operational safety, and readiness of LNG bunkering operations. They will also test mitigation measures for methane slip—a major environmental issue.

Increased Bunker Supply Licences in 2026

As demand for LNG as a ship fuel is set to increase, MPA looks forward to issuing another round of bunker supply license applications in early 2026. These will provide for bio-methane and e-methane, consistent with Singapore’s drive toward cleaner alternative fuels.
