Singapore Welcomes First Methanol Bunkering Tanker

Stellar Shipmanagement Services, a subsidiary of Global Energy Group, has officially taken delivery of MT “MAPLE,” marking the inaugural dedicated methanol bunkering tanker in Singapore. The vessel, classed by Bureau Veritas, signals a significant advancement in alternative low-carbon fuels within the maritime industry.

Historic Delivery Ceremony

The 4,000 DWT IMO Type 2 Chemical and Oil Tanker, built by Sasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, Hiroshima, Japan, was formally handed over in a ceremony in Osakikamijima, Japan, on December 13, 2023.

Cutting-Edge Features

Equipped with twin-screw propulsion, a flow boom, and a mass flow metering system, MT “MAPLE” complies with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) licensing requirements for Oil Product Bunker Tankers.

Global Energy Trading’s Expansion

Global Energy Trading, the trading arm of Global Energy Group, plans to incorporate methanol as part of its marine fuel offering by 2024, with the new bunkering tanker joining the fleet by the end of 2023.

Industry Collaboration

Stellar Shipmanagement, Global Energy Trading, and Bureau Veritas are part of an MPA-led working group to establish a bunkering procedure for the safe handling and delivery of methanol in Singapore, showcasing a commitment to sustainable and low-carbon maritime practices.

This milestone reflects Singapore’s commitment to embracing innovative and eco-friendly bunkering solutions, marking a crucial step in the maritime industry’s journey towards decarbonization.
