Expanding Fleet
BYD has recently made significant strides in expanding its dedicated car carrier fleet to support its growing global presence in the electric vehicle market. Here’s a breakdown of their recent activities and fleet:
- BYD Xi’an Launched: On April 2nd, BYD officially launched its latest car carrier, the BYD Xi’an. This marks the sixth vessel in their fleet that has been publicly acknowledged. Notably, the BYD Xi’an is the fifth car carrier in their fleet to be named after a city where BYD has a car production base. Xi’an is the capital of Shaanxi province and home to one of BYD’s major automotive manufacturing facilities.
- BYD Shenzhen’s Maiden Voyage Imminent: Simultaneously, BYD announced on Weibo that BYD Shenzhen, which holds the title of the world’s largest car ro-ro ship, is preparing for its maiden voyage. This vessel has a remarkable capacity of 9,200 vehicles.
- Naming Convention: BYD has a pattern of naming its car carriers after cities where it has significant car production facilities, highlighting the connection between its manufacturing bases and its shipping logistics.
- Previous Vessels:
- BYD Explorer No. 1: This was BYD’s first vessel, entering service in January 2024. It has a capacity of 7,000 vehicles and was chartered to BYD by another shipowner.
- BYD Hefei: Launched as BYD’s first-owned car carrier, the BYD Hefei also has a 7,000-vehicle capacity. It was the first to be named after a production city, Hefei, and began its maiden voyage to Europe on January 7th of this year, carrying nearly 5,000 NEVs.
- BYD Changzhou: Launched in October 2024, the BYD Changzhou is the second BYD vessel named after a production site. It also has a 7,000-vehicle capacity and commenced service in December 2024, with its first voyage transporting 5,000 NEVs to Europe.
- BYD Changsha: While not mentioned in the initial announcement, the provided text indicates the BYD Changsha is the fifth vessel in BYD’s fleet and the second with a 9,200-vehicle capacity. It was announced in March that it would be launched soon.
This expansion of BYD’s car carrier fleet, including the launch of the BYD Xi’an and the upcoming maiden voyage of the massive BYD Shenzhen, underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening its global logistics capabilities as it continues to expand its presence in international markets.
