A few weeks after the sinking of Agia Zoni II tanker that caused immeasurable environmental damage to the Saronic Gulf, Greek authorities are trying to deal with a new wreck at the near-by area of Aspropyrgos.
The cargo ship “Elefantas” (Elephant), sank at the bay of Aspropyrgos; also in the Saronic Gulf, on Tuesday evening.
For unspecified reasons, the ship took water on Tuesday, causing most of the bow, stern, and main deck of the ship to flood.
However, this time authorities responded immediately to the accident.
A floating anti-pollution barrage has been put in place, while a private company, assisted by two vessels from the port authority, has started the clean-up operation of the small oil spill that was created.
The Elefsina Port Authority is investigating the sinking.
