Small Tanker Goes Down in Saronic Gulf Carrying Fuel

On September 10, the officials are hurrying efforts to contain an oil spill after a tanker reportedly when it took water in and sank off the Atalanti coast.

What happened?

On September 9, the oil tanker Agia Zoni II reportedly sank off Atalanti Coast in the Gulf of Saronic. The vessel was anchored and started sinking after sailing from the Aspropyrgos distilleries in the early hours of Saturday carrying 2,200 metric tons of fuel oil and 370 metric tons of marine gas oil.

Crew members rescued:

The two crew members onboard the vessel were rescued and taken to hospital where they were given examined and deemed to be fit.

Investigation launched:

The Piraeus port authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the sinking and is continuously monitoring the surrounding waters for any possibility of oil leaks.

The vessel’s company has also dispatched emergency specialized crew to secure and contain the oil spill.
