A.P. Moller – Maersk is enhancing its digital infrastructure by deploying the next-generation IoT connectivity platform, OneWireless, across its fleet. This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for real-time data transmission and provide advanced IoT capabilities.

Transforming Connectivity at Sea

The OneWireless platform is being rolled out on 450 vessels, including all Maersk-owned vessels and over 100 time-chartered vessels. This upgrade transitions the existing 2G network infrastructure to 4G technology, enabling a substantial increase in data granularity and paving the way for smarter cargo tracking and enhanced operational insights.

Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessel & Cargo Connectivity at Maersk, emphasized the significance of this upgrade, stating that it is comparable to the shift consumers experienced when moving from 2G to 4G mobile networks. The transition unlocks new levels of efficiency and operational excellence, enabling real-time data sharing at unprecedented speed and reliability.

Built for the Future of Global Trade

The OneWireless platform is a unified network designed to support multiple wireless technologies, including NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE broadband. This design offers scalability, security, and flexibility, enabling Maersk customers to seamlessly integrate their IoT devices and services. The platform ensures seamless interoperability between private and public networks, allowing reliable cargo monitoring whether at sea, in port, or on land.

The platform’s development involved collaboration with leading tech partners, including Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa. The roll-out is scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2026 and is being executed during scheduled port calls to minimize operational disruptions.

Enhancing Customer Experience

The upgraded connectivity platform offers Maersk customers several benefits, including:

  • Real-time cargo tracking: Enabling customers to monitor their shipments with enhanced visibility.
  • Enhanced supply chain visibility: Providing comprehensive insights into the movement and status of goods.
  • Improved operational efficiency: Facilitating proactive decision-making and streamlined operations.

This initiative underscores Maersk’s commitment to digital innovation and its strategic roadmap to facilitate unified connectivity, transforming vessels into fully operational floating offices and enhancing crew connectivity.
