China’s Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI) has unveiled its inhouse developed ‘special’ fans for use with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), which is expected to rise in demand come 2020, reports Seatrade Maritime News.
Dedicated fans
Yang Peng, power plant division general manager at SMDERI, an affiliate of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), said SMDERI has developed two types of dedicated fans
- the centrifugal fan for high temperature and
- the sealing fan.
Both can be customised according to flow pressure.
The usage of fans
Yang said, “The use of these high temperature fans used by exhaust gas cleaning systems is considered to be an emerging market and they are not yet available in the market.”
Yang said marine cryogenic selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems or desulphurisation systems like scrubbers require
- high temperature fan to feed high temperature flue gas into pipelines, while
- sealing fan is needed for sealing of pipeline to prevent leakage.
Fans suited for SCR system and EGCS
“In view of the changing requirement of energy saving and emission reduction of ship’s main engine, we have independently designed and developed the sealing fan and high temperature variable frequency fan suitable for SCR system and EGCS,” Yang said.
High demand for the fans
- From 1 January 2020, all ocean-going ships will be required to burn bunkers with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5% under IMO regulation.
- For ships that wish to continue burning 3.5% high sulphur bunkers, they will have to be retrofitted with scrubbers to bring down the sulphur content of heavy fuel oil.
Yang said, “With the widespread application of desulphurisation systems, the demand for high temperature fan and sealing fan will increase.”
