Somalia Strengthens Control Over Maritime Activities With New Directive

298

Recently, the Somali government, through state-owned media Radio Dalsan, announced a new directive requiring all vessels in Somali waters to fly the Somali flag. The move is part of broader efforts to enhance national security, control illegal activities, and address challenges related to maritime security and illegal fishing.

Ensuring Compliance and Strengthening Security

The new regulation applies to all ships navigating Somali waters, including the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. It aims to bolster compliance with national laws and regulations, giving Somalia better oversight of its maritime domain.

Addressing Illegal Fishing and Piracy

Somalia’s waters have long been vulnerable to illegal fishing and piracy. This directive is part of efforts to combat these issues, protecting local fish stocks and securing the nation’s economic stability.

Expanding International Maritime Cooperation

The directive also aligns with Somalia’s recent maritime cooperation agreements, including one with Turkey, to boost its maritime security capabilities and protect its extensive coastline from illegal activities.
