South Korea Opens World’s 1st SMR Ship Research Institute

  • The world’s first SMR Ship Research Institute has been opened by South Korea’s Mokpo National University aiming to become a global hub for SMR ship research and education.
  • The launch ceremony was attended by more than 100 people, including the President of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Joo-ho Hwang; the Director of the Ship & Offshore Plant Research Institute (SOPRI), Ki-yong Hong; and the Acting President) of Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KIET), Jin-ho Park.

In the UK, Nuclear Engineering International reports South Korea’s Mokpo National University has inaugurated the world’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Ship Research Institute, aiming to become a global leader in SMR ship research and education, reports Nuclear Engineering.

The launch ceremony saw attendance from over 100 dignitaries, including key figures from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Ship & Offshore Plant Research Institute (SOPRI), and Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KIET).

Representatives from major shipyards like Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, and HD Hyundai Mipo, as well as international classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, and Lloyd’s Register, were also present.

In alignment with the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 mandate for carbon-free shipping, the institute aims to spearhead the development of SMR technology, seen as crucial for future eco-friendly marine operations. The institute will collaborate with KHNP, KIET, and leading shipbuilders to advance SMR ship technology and train specialized personnel.

Mokpo National University President Song Ha-cheol emphasized the institute’s role in developing eco-friendly ship technology and establishing a world-class curriculum. At the SMR Ship Forum, experts highlighted the importance of SMR in achieving carbon neutrality and enhancing energy security. The event underscored the university’s commitment to advancing the maritime industry and fostering global talent in SMR ship research.
