South Korea is set to establish quality standards for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable marine fuel in 2024, anticipating blend mandates in 2025 and 2026. The announcement was made during the eco-friendly biofuel revitalization alliance’s fourth general meeting, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to biofuel adoption.

Advancing Biofuel Quality Standards

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (Motie) plans to develop biofuel quality standards based on aviation and shipping industry empirical results. Demonstrations for biofuel blending with bunkers are scheduled for 2024, aligning with the nation’s goals of integrating marine biofuel by 2025 and SAF by 2026. The move signifies South Korea’s proactive approach to expanding domestic biofuels and reducing carbon emissions.
