Expanding ties with U.S. in ship industry
This decision follows U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s indication of interest in expanding bilateral collaboration with South Korea in the shipbuilding sector after taking office later this month.
“To create a foundation for cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. in the shipbuilding industry, the government will form an interagency task force aimed at fostering mutually beneficial partnerships,” the ministry stated.
Additionally, South Korea plans to develop a blueprint in the latter half of 2025 for advancing hydrogen carriers and ammonia-powered vessels.
The government will also outline strategies to strengthen the materials, parts, and equipment sectors supporting shipbuilding, alongside initiatives to promote related research and development efforts.
“The ministry intends to maintain close communication with shipbuilding companies to ensure the nation’s continued competitiveness in the industry,” it added.
In 2024, South Korea’s shipbuilding exports totaled US$25.63 billion, reflecting a 17.6 percent increase from the previous year.
