South Korea’s Push For Eco-Friendly Shipbuilding With New Life Cycle Assessment Agreement

7

The Korea Economic Daily highlighted that HD Hyundai Marine Solution Co. has entered into a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Agreement with HD Hyundai Samho and French shipping giant CMA-CGM. This partnership aims to develop a comprehensive framework for measuring carbon emissions across the life cycle of ships, from production to disposal. The initiative seeks to address the challenge of tracking emissions in the complex, material-intensive shipbuilding process.

Establishing Carbon Measurement Standards in Shipbuilding

Under the agreement, HD Hyundai Marine Solution will work with CMA-CGM and HD Hyundai Samho to gather emissions data throughout a ship’s life cycle. This data will be crucial for creating a standardized carbon measurement methodology tailored to the shipbuilding sector’s unique requirements.

Toward International Standardization and Eco-Friendly Retrofits

HD Hyundai Marine Solution aims to establish global standards for carbon measurement by collaborating with third-party verifiers, including the Korean Standards Association. This standardized approach could also support HD Hyundai’s digital and eco-friendly retrofit solutions, driving the industry toward more sustainable practices.
