Spain launches first green maritime corridor linking Valencia and Palma

6

Spain has taken a major step toward cleaner shipping. Baleària, together with the ports of Valencia and Palma, has signed an agreement to create the country’s first green maritime corridor. The project focuses on cutting emissions on the Valencia–Palma route and targets zero-emission operations by 2030.

Under the plan, two vessels serving this route will gradually shift to biofuels. This change will reduce reliance on conventional marine fuels while keeping passenger and freight services active. At the same time, the ships will be upgraded with onboard batteries to supply renewable electricity for auxiliary systems during sailing.

In addition, the vessels will be fitted with onshore power supply connections. This will allow them to plug into shore-based electricity while in port, cutting emissions during port stays. The ports involved will support the infrastructure needed to make this transition work smoothly.

The corridor aims to act as a practical model for wider maritime decarbonisation. By combining cleaner fuels, electrification, and coordinated port action, the route shows how short-sea shipping can move toward climate goals without disrupting operations.
