Spanish Ports See Steady Overall Container Traffic but Mixed Performance Among Key Hubs

11

Spanish ports experienced steady container traffic in the first three months of 2025, handling a total of 4.32 million TEUs. This figure represents a slight increase of 1% compared to the container volume recorded during the first quarter of the previous year, reports Container News.

Sub-Optimal Performance

Spain’s port sector presents a mixed performance in the latest data.

Algeciras, the largest port in Spain, experienced a significant 11% decline in throughput, indicating a weak performance.

Barcelona, the second-busiest port in the country, also saw a decrease in cargo volumes, although more modest at 2%.

Bucking the trend among the top three ports, Valencia recorded positive growth with a 3% increase in cargo volumes.

However, the most notable change was at Malaga, which saw its throughput more than quadruple. This sharp increase follows substantial losses experienced in 2024. Despite this strong rebound, Malaga’s current volumes remain below the levels recorded in 2023.

Conversely, Bilbao port reported a significant year-on-year decline of 10% in its container volumes, with throughput reaching 102,000 TEUs in the first quarter of 2025.

Overall, while the largest ports of Algeciras and Barcelona saw declines, Valencia showed growth, and Malaga experienced a strong recovery. Bilbao’s container volumes, however, saw a notable decrease.
