Sparks Ignite Gas Cargo Aboard Ship

On July 17, sparks were noticed onboard the engine room of a cargo vessel docked Jeti Syah Bandar port.

What happened?

The cargo vessel Mutiara Kargo 3’ was transporting gas cylinders and petrol to a resort in Pulau Tioman when sparks were noticed near the engine room, which later spread and destroyed the cargo vessel which was docked at Jeti Syah Bandar.

Vessel sinks

The fire erupted onboard the vessel, the crew members were unable to contain the fire and the vessel sank at Sea.

The fire started spreading to the storage area of the vessel resulting in a few explosions that engulfed it before it sunk.

Mersing OCPD Supt Cyril Edward Nuing said, “A local worker who was on board noticed sparks from the engine, which later spread to other parts of the vessel. A worker managed to escape and contacted the Fire and Rescue Department. The estimated loss from the fire is RM170,000”.

Investigation launched

An investigation has been launched into the incident to determine the cause of the fire and explosion. Fortunately, none of the crew members were injured during the incident.
