Spike in Armed Robberies Highlights Persistent Security Risks in Asian Waters

Safety4Sea reports that ReCAAP ISC recorded three armed robbery incidents in Asian waters between 18 and 24 November. The events took place in two key locations: two in the eastbound lane of the Singapore Strait and one at an anchorage in Indonesia.

The attacks involved small groups of perpetrators who boarded the vessels during their transit or while they were at anchor. In two cases, the intruders stole items such as ship stores or scrap metal. The third incident resulted in no loss. Importantly, ReCAAP ISC confirmed that all crew members remained safe.

This update raises the total number of armed robbery reports in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore to 102 so far this year. The figure shows that the region continues to face steady security challenges, especially in high-traffic lanes where vessels experience limited manoeuvrability.

ReCAAP ISC encourages vessels to increase lookout measures and maintain strong bridge team awareness. Coastal states have also been asked to reinforce patrols and strengthen response capability at sea and at anchorage areas. Masters are reminded to report all incidents and suspicious activity using the contact details published in ReCAAP ISC’s regional reporting guide.

The latest incidents highlight the ongoing need for strong maritime security practices, early detection, and prompt communication with authorities to reduce risks in busy regional corridors.
