In a landmark development for sustainable shipping, St1 and St1 Biokraft have successfully completed their first delivery of Swedish-produced liquefied biomethane to the maritime sector. The vessel Tern Ocean was bunkered at the Port of Gothenburg, positioning the port and its partners as frontrunners in the transition to cleaner marine fuels. This initiative is part of Gothenburg’s broader goal of becoming Scandinavia’s leading hub for alternative fuel bunkering.
Collaborative Success and Real-World Validation
The recent pilot bunkering operation at quay 519 served as more than just a fuel delivery—it tested the entire value chain in real-time. The collaboration between St1, Terntank, gas infrastructure owner Nordion Energi, and port authorities demonstrated that large-scale biomethane use in shipping is both technically feasible and logistically achievable.
As stated by Therese Jällbrink from the Port of Gothenburg, cooperation among all players is key to accelerating maritime decarbonization.
Pathway to Expansion and Green Corridors
With demand for renewable fuels like biomethane rising, St1 and St1 Biokraft are preparing to scale up production. Several new facilities are planned across Sweden, and a liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg, expected by 2026, will further connect biomethane producers to maritime users.
This infrastructure development supports the creation of green shipping corridors, enabling fossil-free logistics chains and reinforcing Gothenburg’s role as a pioneer in alternative fuel supply for the maritime industry.
