STAX Engineering Partners with Shell for Emissions Control at California Ports

113

STAX Engineering, a leader in maritime emissions capture and control, has entered into a five-year partnership with Equilon Enterprises LLC, operating as Shell Oil Products US (Shell). Starting in 2025, STAX will implement its advanced emissions capture services at Shell’s Mormon Island Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles. This initiative aligns with the upcoming California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions regulations for tanker vessels, making STAX the first and only emissions control provider to service tanker vessels in California.

Innovative Emissions Control Solutions

STAX offers a pioneering alternative to shore power for emissions reduction in tankers. Since its launch in the first quarter of 2024, the company has quickly expanded, becoming the first and only provider to service container vessels, auto carriers, and tankers in California. STAX has secured exclusive service agreements at major California ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Hueneme, Benicia, Richmond, and Oakland. The company has also established partnerships with prominent international shippers like NYK Line and Hyundai GLOVIS.

Leadership and Industry Impact

According to Mike Walker, CEO of STAX, the company’s ability to service tankers demonstrates strong demand from partners seeking efficient emissions reduction solutions. He highlights the significant milestone of extending their emissions capture and control services to the Mormon Island Terminal as part of their mission to offer affordable and accessible solutions to port communities. STAX aims to support these communities in achieving their environmental goals without disrupting operations. As STAX continues to expand its presence in California, the company plans to extend its technology to ports across North America and beyond.

Technological Advancements and Environmental Benefits

STAX provides environmentally friendly, land- and barge-based mobile emissions capture and control technology to shipping terminal and fleet operators. This technology does not require costly and time-consuming retrofits. STAX’s patented flexible exhaust capture system is designed to fit all ships without modifications, even in the most congested ports. The system removes 99% of particulate matter (PM) and 95% of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from exhaust before releasing it as purified gas. To date, STAX has treated at-berth vessels for a cumulative 4,800 hours, controlling 37 tons of pollutants and counting.
