  • Stena Bulk plans to register up to five Suezmax tankers under the Swedish flag, making them the largest vessels ever flagged by Sweden.

  • The move reflects Sweden’s ongoing reforms to boost maritime competitiveness, including tax incentives and registry improvements.

  • The transition supports Sweden’s maritime ecosystem and strategic influence in global shipping regulations.

Leading tanker shipping company Stena Bulk has announced its intention to register up to five of its Suezmax vessels under the Swedish flag by mid-2025. These tankers, each around 275 meters long and with a gross tonnage of 81,000 tonnes, will be Sweden’s largest ships ever flagged. This initiative demonstrates Stena Bulk’s strong commitment to strengthening the country’s maritime sector, according to Stena Bulk.

Strengthening Sweden’s Maritime Competitiveness

Sweden has made significant strides in attracting more vessels to its registry in recent years. Policy reforms such as eliminating stamp duties on ship registration, streamlining the Swedish Ship Register, and proposing a competitive tonnage tax regime have made the environment more favorable for shipowners. Stena Bulk’s decision to flag its Suezmax fleet in Sweden is a direct outcome of these efforts and is a signal of growing domestic confidence in Sweden’s maritime framework.

Filling a Strategic Gap in the Swedish Flag Register

Currently, Sweden has no Suezmax tankers under its flag. The upcoming registration of these vessels will fill that gap, boosting national capacity in the deep-sea tanker segment. This also aligns with the broader geopolitical need for countries to retain control over strategic transportation assets, reinforcing Sweden’s autonomy and influence in international shipping.

Operational Alignment and Collaborative Transition

Stena Bulk is working closely with Swedish authorities and trade unions to ensure a seamless transition. Key issues such as crewing, compliance, and operational safety are being addressed as part of this effort. Ensuring that the vessels operate safely and efficiently under the Swedish flag is a top priority, and final administrative procedures are expected to conclude by July 1, 2025.

Supporting the National Maritime Workforce and Global Influence

Registering these vessels in Sweden will generate opportunities for Swedish officers, seafarers, and maritime professionals. It will also enhance Sweden’s influence in international maritime policymaking through platforms like the European Union and the International Maritime Organization.

Leadership Perspective and Long-Term Vision

Erik Hånell, President and CEO of Stena Bulk, emphasized that this decision aligns with the government’s maritime goals and the need for greater national deep-sea shipping capacity. He reiterated the company’s focus on safe, effective, and sustainable operations as it continues to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure long-term strategic value for Sweden’s maritime future.
