The Stena Futura, the first of Stena Line’s new “NewMax” hybrid ferries, has successfully completed its sea trials in China. This marks a significant milestone in the vessel’s construction, confirming that its systems are fully operational and performing according to specifications.
Enhanced Freight Capacity
Stena Line is significantly enhancing its freight capacity on the busy Belfast-Heysham route with the introduction of two new hybrid vessels, the Stena Futura and its sister ship, the Stena Connecta. This expansion comes in response to increasing customer demand for services between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
The Stena Futura has successfully completed its sea trials, marking a crucial milestone in its construction. Sea trials are comprehensive tests conducted at sea to ensure that all of the vessel’s systems are fully operational and meet agreed specifications. These tests rigorously assess various aspects, including:
- Engine performance and endurance
- Fuel consumption
- Navigation and radio equipment
- Emergency systems
- Speed and maneuverability
- Engine and thruster performance
- Overall safety
With the completion of these trials, Stena Futura is on schedule to enter service on the Belfast-Heysham route in late summer 2025. Stena Connecta is expected to follow in early 2026.
