The Swedish ferry operator, Stena RoRo, recently took delivery of E-Flexer No. 12, Guillaume de Normandie from the Chinese shipyard CMI Jinling (Weihai). This vessel is the last of five ordered E-Flexer ships for Brittany Ferries. It will be replacing the old Normandie between Portsmouth and Caen in April 2025.

Key features of the Guillaume de Normandie.

The Guillaume de Normandie has been designed with an advanced environmental focus, with a battery-hybrid system that can operate the ship purely on battery power in and out of port. The vessel is also equipped with multi-fuel engines, able to run on marine diesel (MGO), liquefied natural gas (LNG), biodiesel, or biogas, so it can scale up for alternative fuels in the future.

  1. Battery Capacity: The ship has the world’s largest battery-hybrid package at 12 MWh, which enables it to navigate port without using its diesel engines. It can also reach 17.5 knots solely on battery power.
  2. Shore Connection: The ship is fitted with an 8 MW shore connection, enabling high-speed charging for completely fossil-free port stays.

Environmental Benefits and Innovation

The E-Flexer series is engineered to meet and exceed current, as well as future, environmental regulations. Its hybrid technology, blended with a scaleable fuel system, offers minimal CO2 and more environmentally friendly ferry operation. The PTI/PTO system with battery power allows it to manoeuvre quickly in ports whilst still meeting some of the biggest performance requirements as far as International regulations are concerned.

Ship Specifications

The Guillaume de Normandie is certified for:

  1. 1,300 passengers
  2. 2,410 lane meters of cargo, including 176 lane meters for personal cars
  3. Passenger cabins: 222 across four decks
  4. Speed: 23 knots, with 17.5 knots achievable on battery alone

Modern Interior Design

Figura Arkitekter AB designed the ship’s modern interior, taking cues from Normandy and adapting specifically to the needs of the Portsmouth – Caen route.

Stena RoRo’s E-Flexer Fleet

This is the twelfth E-Flexer ship delivered by Stena RoRo, and it is the fifth and final vessel ordered by Brittany Ferries. The E-Flexer series has seen continuous development in both technical design and environmental performance, ensuring that the vessels meet and exceed international requirements.

Charter Agreement with Brittany Ferries

The Guillaume de Normandie is on long-term charter for 10 years with Brittany Ferries, and the other four E-Flexer vessels are part of the company’s modernizing fleet. Galicia was delivered in 2020, while the others arrived in 2021, 2023, and 2024.

E-Flexer and RoRo Future Orders

Stena RoRo has secured 15 firm orders for E-Flexer vessels with CMI Jinling and more orders for New Max RoRo vessels. Its fleet will evolve further with the introduction of new environmentally friendly technologies, ensuring that ferry operators stay future-proofed.
