Stena RoRo has completed a major retrofit of the Stena Foreteller at the CMI Jinling shipyard in Weihai, China. The transformation includes a fourth vehicle deck and several sustainability upgrades, aligning with Stena Line’s goal to cut CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2030.

Key Upgrade: Added Vehicle Deck

  • A fourth deck has been added to increase lane meters from 3,000 to 4,000.

  • This boosts cargo capacity significantly and improves operational efficiency.

Environmental and Operational Enhancements

  • Shore power connection added to reduce emissions while docked.

  • Upgraded bow thrusters improve maneuverability due to increased wind surface.

  • Additional mooring winches installed for stability.

  • Preventive maintenance and system upgrades carried out.

  • Vessel has been repainted during the rebuild.

Sister Ship and Future Vessels

  • Sister ship Stena Forerunner will undergo similar upgrades by end of summer.

  • Two new hybrid vessels, Stena Futura and Stena Connecta, are under construction at the same yard.

  • These methanol-ready ships, with battery and shore power support, will operate on the Belfast–Heysham route starting this fall.

Stena’s Vision and Strategy

Dennis Tetzlaff, COO Fleet at Stena Line, emphasized that both retrofitting older vessels and developing new eco-friendly ships are crucial to meeting their 2030 sustainability targets.

Mikael Abrahamsson of Stena RoRo highlighted the technical and cultural challenges of such international retrofitting projects and praised the collaborative effort involved.
