  • Qatar Shipyard and Classification Society ABS have partnered to introduce remote survey technology for ship repairs and retrofits.
  • This innovative approach promises faster, safer, and less disruptive inspections.

Qatar Shipyard and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) have reached a landmark agreement, enabling the shipyard to utilize remote survey techniques for ship repairs and retrofits. This collaborative effort represents a significant advancement in the application of remote inspection technologies within the shipbuilding industry.

Benefits of Remote Surveys

The use of remote surveys offers several advantages for both shipyards and vessels. Traditionally, classification society surveys involve physical presence on the ship, potentially leading to downtime and disruptions. Remote surveying, however, utilizes technologies like drones (UAVs), crawlers, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and wearable cameras to conduct inspections. This approach minimizes the need for personnel to be physically present on the vessel, resulting in:

  • Reduced Downtime: Remote surveys allow for quicker inspections, minimizing the time a vessel is out of service for repairs or retrofits.
  • Enhanced Safety: By limiting the need for personnel to access potentially hazardous areas, remote surveying reduces safety risks associated with traditional inspection methods.
  • Increased Efficiency: The streamlined nature of remote surveys translates to faster turnaround times and improved efficiency for shipyards.

A Pioneering Collaboration

This project is the culmination of a joint development project (JDP) between Qatar Shipyard and ABS. The JDP focused on adapting ABS’s existing remote survey program, originally designed for operational vessels, to the specific needs of shipyards. The completed trials included inspections for rudder clearance, stern tube wear and tear, and rudder plug openings. The established framework will serve as a foundation for expanding the scope of remote surveys in the future.

The successful implementation of remote survey technology at Qatar Shipyard paves the way for wider adoption within the shipbuilding industry. This innovative approach promises to revolutionize how ship repairs and retrofits are conducted, leading to faster, safer, and more efficient operations.
