Suez Canal Authority Issues IMO Sulphur Cap Status

According to an article published in The Swedish Club, ships passing Suez Canal cannot discharge any wastewater from the open-loop cleaning system.

Whilst the use of an ordinary exhaust system is allowed, according to the latest information from the Suez Canal Authority (SCA).

The information refers to Circular 8 2019 from SCA regarding the consideration of using fuel oil with low Sulphur content in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI during transit from the Suez Canal. Here the SCA stated:

You are kindly advised that Suez Canal Authority puts no conditions or restrictions on fuel oil or Open-loop exhaust Gas cleaning systems until the ratification of MARPOL Annex VI by the Arab Republic of Egypt. This is also consistent with the obligation that Wash water resulting from exhaust gas cleaning systems shall not be discharged into the water during vessel transit of the Suez Canal.

In the latest clarification from 12 January 2020, SCA confirms that ships passing the Suez Canal cannot discharge any wastewater from the open-loop cleaning system, whilst the use of an ordinary exhaust system is allowed.
