- The Suez Canal Authority offered a 15% discount on transit fees for large container ships to encourage the use of the canal amid regional tensions.
- The recent Yemen ceasefire is expected to improve regional stability and support safer maritime navigation through the Red Sea and Suez Canal.
- The Suez Canal remains a critical trade route, handling 12% of global shipping and significantly reducing shipping distances between continents.
Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), stated on Sunday that the security situation has improved enough to allow ships to gradually return to navigating the Suez Canal. He explained that recent security tensions in the Red Sea had forced many shipping lines to take longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope. This change affected the entire maritime transport industry, causing longer travel times, higher costs, and increased prices for consumers, as reported by Ahram Online.
Crisis Response and Suez Canal Challenges
Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, explained that the SCA managed the crisis by maintaining open communication with shipping lines. This helped adjust sailing schedules and allowed for the gradual resumption of vessel transit through the canal. He mentioned a recent announcement of a 15 percent discount on transit fees for container ships of 130,000 tons or more, whether loaded or empty. This measure was intended to ease the burden on shipping companies and encourage them to use the Suez Canal.
Rabie emphasized that the Red Sea crisis showed the canal’s vital role, as it offers time and cost advantages and essential services not available via the Cape of Good Hope route.
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty noted that regional tensions since 2023 affected navigation in the Red Sea and the daily vessel flow through the canal. He pointed out that Egypt faced significant losses, estimated at $800 million per month and totaling about $8 billion since the conflict in Gaza began. Abdelatty stressed that these events highlighted the importance of maritime security for global supply chains and regional stability. He also called for addressing the root causes of the regional tensions to ensure lasting security in the Red Sea.
Yemen Ceasefire and the Importance of the Suez Canal
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty described the recent Yemen ceasefire, brokered by the US and Oman, as a positive step toward regional peace and stability. He said the agreement helps reduce tensions and supports the safe passage of ships through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Abdelatty added that this progress strengthens global confidence in maritime security and the flow of international trade.
He emphasized that the ceasefire allows vessels to navigate more safely and efficiently, benefiting global transport and supply chains. Abdelatty noted that peaceful resolutions, even small ones, contribute widely to economic stability by protecting key trade routes.
Regarding the Suez Canal, Abdelatty highlighted its crucial role in global trade, linking continents and significantly shortening shipping distances. He pointed out that the canal reduces costs, lowers emissions, and enhances worldwide economic connections.
Abdelatty concluded that Egypt will continue working toward a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and promoting the Red Sea as an essential route for international navigation and commerce. Since the conflict began in October 2023, attacks by Yemeni Houthis on Israeli-linked ships disrupted maritime traffic, forcing rerouting via the longer Cape of Good Hope. The Suez Canal remains vital, handling 12 percent of global trade and serving as a key source of foreign currency for Egypt.
