Suez Canal Transit Guidelines: Avoiding Claims

1329

  • Vessels must adhere to specific guidelines to avoid claims during Suez Canal transit.
  • Important protocols include hiring approved mooring services and ensuring safe handling.
  • Documentation and communication with P&I correspondents are critical in case of incidents.

All vessels transiting the Suez Canal should hire mooring boats solely from the Canal Mooring and Lights Company, an approved provider by the Suez Canal Authority, reports The American Club.

Lifting Equipment Standards

Vessels must have well-maintained lifting equipment capable of hoisting three-ton mooring boats and their crews. LNG, LPG carriers, and loaded tankers cannot carry extra boats.

During mooring boat handling, Masters must ensure the vessel’s propellers are clear and reduce speed during lifting and lowering. An appointed officer should oversee safety.

Tug Escort Requirement

Vessels lacking suitable lifting mechanisms or inadequate boats for mooring operations will require a tug escort to transit the Canal.

Masters should assign an officer to witness and supervise all lifting and lowering operations involving mooring tugs, ensuring smooth and safe processes.

Securing Personal Belongings

Masters should instruct the mooring boat crew to keep personal items, such as phones or cash, secure during lifting and lowering operations to prevent losses or claims.

Masters must confirm that crane wires are in good condition before starting mooring operations. Crew members should be aware of crane and wire capacities in advance.

Maintenance Documentation

Crew should keep crane maintenance records and operational certificates readily available for inspection if requested during transit.

In the event of an incident, Masters are advised not to provide documentation to the mooring crew. Instead, vessel crews should document the operation with photos and videos.

Communication with Agents and P&I Correspondents

If any issues arise during transit, Members should promptly contact their agent and P&I correspondent.

In incidents, Masters should prepare a statement of facts and consult their P&I correspondent before signing any related documents.
