The enforcement of IMO’s 2020 sulphur regulations is expected to have a crucial bearing on the success of the maritime transport industry, says the MOL Chief.
Crucial bearing
In his New Year message, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) president and CEO Ikeda conveyed that the enforcement of 2020 sulphur regulation is expected to impact the global shipping industry.
The coming into force of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 0.5% global sulphur cap is now less than 12 months away and raises the major cost and operational issues for shipowners and operators.
Time is ticking
Mr.Ikeda further stated that the enforcement of these regulations will mark a major turning point and will have a crucial bearing on the success of the MOL Group as well as the marine transport industry as a whole.
The clock is ticking for the maritime industry with operational concerns notwithstanding, and a re-examination of the preparations is required to assess the sales and marketing areas and to identify any hidden risks. He further assured that MOL would leave any stone unturned to meet the challenges thrown at them inorder to meet the low sulphur regulation.
