Firefighters are warning people about the dangers of leaving mirrors or glass objects near windows as reported by Hull Live.

Fire ignites

A fire ignited by sunlight reflecting off a mirror has completely damaged a flat. Six fire engines were dispatched to Crediton, Devon, to put out the incident.

When firemen from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service investigated the source, they discovered that the problem was caused by a mirror reflecting sunlight onto the beds. They’re now reminding folks not to install mirrors or glass near windows during this time of year.

They asked people to take extra precautions in a Facebook post.

Rare occurrence

“This shot depicts the damage that can occur when sunlight is refracted by a mirror and casts light on combustible materials such as bedding or clothing,” they stated. This occurred over the weekend in Crediton. It’s a rare occurrence, but the consequences can be disastrous.

“At this time of year, be careful not to leave mirrors or other glass objects near windows or in direct sunlight. Also, make sure your smoke detectors are working in case the worst happens.”

According to them, the fire-damaged 80% of the first floor flat and the roof void, as well as half of the ground level flat. They claimed that the reason was unintentional.

The fire is believed to have caused no injuries.
