  • IMO showcases their stride in reducing greenhouse gases in the UN.
  • Achieving net-zero GHG emissions around 2050.
  • Global level-playing-field for shipping decarbonization.

The recent United Nations Climate Change conference (OP 28) in Dubai saw the International Maritime Organization (IMO) showcasing its strides in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships. Mr. Camille Bourgeon from the IMO Secretariat presented their submission to the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), reports IMO.

2023 IMO GHG Strategy

Adopted in July, the strategy commits to achieving net-zero GHG emissions around 2050, considering different national circumstances. Aiming for 5-10% usage of zero or near-zero emission technologies in international shipping by 2030 is a key target.

Supporting a Just Transition

Emphasizing a fair transition for seafarers, IMO highlighted ongoing efforts in this direction during the conference.

Energy Efficiency Measures

Mr. Bourgeon outlined IMO’s measures to enhance shipping’s energy efficiency and ongoing impact assessment work. Further measures to reduce ship GHG emissions, including a goal-based marine fuel standard and a maritime GHG emissions pricing mechanism, are expected to be adopted in 2025.

Participation in COP 28

IMO’s active involvement in COP 28 involves various events aimed at outlining their ambitions in the 2023 GHG Strategy and stressing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to meet these goals.

Side-Event Highlights

On December 9, a significant side-event jointly held by IMO, UNCTAD, and IRENA will focus on “The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy: defining the global level-playing-field for shipping decarbonization.” This event aims to outline the strategy’s ambitions and underline the necessity of collaborative efforts to achieve these objectives.
