Sustainable Shipping: New Glossary Unveiled

231

The Alternative low- and zero-carbon fuels workstream of the GreenVoyage2050 Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA) has unveiled a comprehensive glossary aimed at enhancing industry comprehension of life cycle assessments (LCA) and sustainability criteria related to alternative marine fuels. This free-to-access glossary, available on the IMO GreenVoyage2050 website, demystifies terminology based on the ISO 14040:2006 Environmental Management – Life Cycle Assessment Standard, offering clear insights into the principles and frameworks governing marine fuel LCAs.

Simplifying ISO Standards for a Low-Carbon Future

Led by Mr Robert Masse, Chair of the Low Carbon GIA Alternative low- and zero-carbon fuels workstream, the initiative seeks to facilitate an understanding of ISO standards crucial for assessing greenhouse gas (GHG) profiles of alternative fuels. The glossary, born from collaborative efforts across the industry, clarifies and simplifies ISO language, enabling stakeholders to navigate LCA concepts and frameworks effectively. This resource complements the ongoing work on IMO Guidelines for the life cycle GHG intensity of marine fuels, emphasizing the industry’s commitment to a low-carbon future.
