Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Maritime University (IMU).

This landmark partnership is designed to strengthen maritime education, skill development, and research, while preparing future professionals for career opportunities in India’s fast-growing shipbuilding and heavy fabrication sectors. The MoU was signed during a thematic session at IMU’s Chennai campus, ahead of India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025.

Strengthening India’s Maritime Vision

The collaboration aligns with India’s ambition to become a global leader in the maritime sector by boosting indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and fostering a highly skilled workforce.

The MoU signing was witnessed by senior officials, including Shri Rajesh Kumar Sinha, IAS, Special Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Dr. Malini V. Shankar, IAS (Retd.), Vice Chancellor of IMU. The agreement underscores SDHI’s commitment to advancing self-reliance while supporting the evolving demands of the global maritime industry.

Centres of Excellence and Skill Development

Under the agreement, SDHI and IMU will establish specialised Centres of Excellence across IMU campuses and SDHI’s shipyard, focusing on shipbuilding, naval architecture, training, and innovation.

Students will gain hands-on industrial experience at SDHI’s shipyard, complementing IMU’s academic expertise. The partnership also aims to develop industry-aligned training and research programmes, promote collaboration with vocational institutes and government departments, and drive large-scale skill development initiatives in line with India’s maritime vision.

The SDHI-IMU partnership represents a major step toward integrating academic knowledge with industrial practice, ensuring that India nurtures a new generation of maritime professionals equipped with world-class skills. As Rajeev Nayyer, Advisor at SDHI, stated, the collaboration will provide a strong foundation of “talent and technology” to enhance India’s global competitiveness and accelerate its maritime growth story.
