SWS Secures AIP For Three New Green Ship Designs At Marintec China 2025

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS), a subsidiary of CSSC, has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from Lloyd’s Register for three advanced green ship designs unveiled at Marintec China 2025. The approvals signal the yard’s strong return to the gas carrier market and highlight its commitment to next-generation, low-carbon vessels that support global energy transition goals.

Return to Gas Carrier Market with Next-Generation VLEC

SWS introduced a 102,000 cbm Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) tailored specifically for the growing US–China ethane trade. The design features optimised dimensions for navigation through the Houston Ship Channel and uses an in-house type-B cargo containment system.
To improve efficiency, the vessel incorporates aluminium alloy tanks to reduce weight, hydrodynamic energy-saving devices, an ethane dual-fuel main engine, and a shaft generator. This VLEC marks a strategic step in re-entering the gas-carrier construction segment and aligns with growing global demand for ethane transport capacity.

LNG-Ready Container Ship and Ammonia-Fuel VLCC Advance Green Technology

SWS also unveiled a 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship, an evolution of its existing series. The vessel includes re-optimised dimensions to increase slot and weight capacity, larger LNG tanks for longer endurance, and a modular “ammonia-ready” design framework, allowing future conversion to ammonia fuel.
Additionally, the 300,000 dwt ammonia dual-fuel VLCC features two 4,700 cbm C-type ammonia fuel tanks placed on the main deck and is powered by a WinGD 7X82DF-A-1.0 ammonia-capable engine. The design complies with IMO’s interim safety guidelines (MSC.1/Circ.1687), with SWS and partners completing a thorough HAZID assessment covering storage, transfer, and combustion processes.

The three AIPs reflect a milestone year for SWS, which delivered a record 29 vessels totaling over 2.7 million dwt in 2025 surpassing its planned targets. By advancing ammonia-ready, LNG dual-fuel, and ethane-fueled ship designs, SWS demonstrates its growing leadership in green shipbuilding and reinforces its position as a key player in the global shift towards cleaner maritime transportation.
