Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) has agreed on a contract with Netherlands-based SBM Offshore to construct the hull of the sixth 2.3 million barrel “general purpose” Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) unit. The contract was concluded on December 20. This agreement is based on SBM Offshore’s universal hull design concept, where an FPSO hull design will have a storage capacity of 2.3 million barrels of crude oil, reports iMarine.

Advanced FPSO Design and Capabilities

The FPSO measures 333 meters in length and 60 meters in beam, with a deck area equivalent to three standard soccer fields and a displacement of 460,000 tons. It is equipped with a multi-point mooring system, which allows it to operate in various marine environments, including the challenging conditions of West Africa, South America, and other global regions. This design allows the FPSO to adapt well in multiple seas around the world for oil and gas development operations.

Establishing a Legacy in FPSO Construction

This contract marks the sixth order for FPSO hulls from SBM Offshore. Of these, the first four were delivered in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023, respectively. The fifth FPSO, Jaguar, was under construction from April 2023, and it was delivered successfully on November 14, 2023.

Milestone for Chinese Shipbuilding

In the past 25 years, SWS has managed to have successfully completed 579 ships and offshore platforms. The most prominent is that SWS became the first shipyard to achieve more than 100 million DWT vessels by completion.

Diversity in Shipbuilding

Being the only shipyard in the world capable of simultaneously building large civilian vessels and offshore equipment, SWS showcases remarkable versatility. It produces an array of vessels, including large cruise ships, car carriers (PCTCs), container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and ultra-large FPSOs. Such capability is unmatched by its competitors globally.

A Vision for the Future

SWS’s current portfolio focuses entirely on medium- and high-end ship types. This includes large and ultra-large cruise ships, container ships, oil tankers, and FPSOs. The shipyard’s emphasis on advanced vessels highlights its commitment to innovation and leadership in the global maritime industry.
