Taiwan Partnership Accelerates As Samsung Heavy Launches New Remote Ship Operations Hub

Yonhap News reports that Samsung Heavy Industries has launched a new remote operation center inside Evergreen Group’s headquarters in Taipei. The move marks another step forward in the digital transformation of ship operations.

A New Control Tower for Real-Time Monitoring

Samsung Heavy said the Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC) acts as a land-based control tower. It tracks vessel data, equipment status, and key performance indicators in real time.

This setup helps teams carry out faster inspections and simpler maintenance. It also improves communication between the ship and the shore. Evergreen plans to link more vessels to the center as the system expands.

Built Through a Long Partnership

The company noted that the SROC is the first center created through a direct shipbuilding–shipper partnership. It reflects the long relationship between the two companies.

Earlier this year, Samsung Heavy tested remote-monitoring tools on Evergreen’s container ships during a 10,000-kilometer route between Oakland and Kaohsiung. These tests helped prepare the grounds for wider cooperation.

Moving Toward Autonomous Vessel Operations

Both companies agreed to develop more remote inspection tools. They also plan to prepare for an era of remotely operated autonomous ships.

According to Samsung Heavy, the SROC will support safer operations and allow quicker response during emergencies. The company added that this project will also help the Korean shipbuilding sector advance autonomous navigation technology and shape global standards.

Why This Matters

This development shows how fast maritime technology, autonomous navigation, remote vessel monitoring, smart ship systems, and digital maritime operations are evolving. It also highlights the growing importance of cooperation between shipbuilders and shipping companies as fleets become more connected and more automated.
